Department of ORAL PATHOLOGY
Overview
Oral pathology is a specialty in dentistry and discipline of pathology which deals with the nature, identification and extent of disease affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions. It is a science that investigates the causes, processes and effects of the diseases. The specialty also deals with the forensic odontology which is currently gaining momentum in India. The practice of oral pathology includes research and diagnosis of diseases using clinical, radiographic, biochemical, histopathological or other investigations. The department runs a separate haematology unit wherein blood samples are collected and analyzed. This branch also teaches dental anatomy and dental histology which form the basis for other dental subjects.

Professor and HOD
As the Head of the Department of Oral Pathology, it’s my privilege to welcome you to our dynamic non clinical academic field which aims at equipping the students with concepts of pathological basis of diseases affecting oral and maxillofacial regions. The faculty members are always dedicated to shine the next generation of oral pathologists and help them pursue their interests in wide scope of research. At Lenora institute of dental sciences, we provide the highest level of histopathological diagnosis of hard and soft tissues diseases of Oral cavity along with exfoliative cytology, FNAC where the treatment modality is a requisite. We have well equipped histopathology lab with Penta head, stereo and darkfield microscopes to help in diagnosis of head and neck pathologies including special cases like Salivary duct carcinoma, Basal cell adenocarcinoma, Florid cement osseous dysplasia, Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma, Ameloblastic carcinoma, Malignant melanoma and Mucormycosis etc.The clinico pathological conference shall be held once a month involving the faculties of Oral Medicine and Radiology, Oral Pathology and allied clinical departments and various insights discussed and interpreted. Thank you and I look forward to the opportunity in exploring the advancements and wide range of opportunities in the field of Oral & maxillofacial Pathology.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
Oral pathology is that part of pathology and a branch of dentistry that studies the causes and effects of diseases affecting oral and maxillofacial regions and understanding of which is essential for diagnosis as well as treatment. The specialty is a confluence of basic sciences and clinical dentistry where undergraduates learn the conduct of routine blood analysis . The department also conducts research in oral cancer using advanced immune histochemical methods, besides the microbiological aspects of oral infections.
- Applied Basic Sciences
- Dental anatomy and Dental Histology
- Oral Pathology
Objectives
- Oral Clinical examination skills
- Diagnostic skills
- Clinical Proficiency
- Research and Critical Thinking.
Types of Assessments
- Written Examinations: These are designed to test the student’s theoretical knowledge about the pathologic basis of diseases affecting oral and maxillofacial region.
- Seminars: Seminar presentations provides platform for students to share knowledge, engage with peers, and develop teaching skills.
- Practical Examinations: Students are assessed on their ability to conduct diagnostic tests related to oral diseases in the fields of Hematology, cytology and Histopathology.
Logbook and Continuous Assessment: Students are required to maintain a logbook of their academic year which is assessed on daily basis.
ACADEMICS:
Teaching the undergraduate students by integrating the following teaching methods:
- Implementing collaborative smart board teaching
- Using HD Video teaching demonstration videos for efficient learning of tooth carving.
- Slide discussions by using visual aids.
- Activity based e – learning
Diagnosis: We provide the highest level of histopathological diagnosis of hard and soft tissues of Oral cavity and radical neck dissection specimens along with exfoliative cytology, FNAC where the treatment modality is a requisite
Forensic Odontology: In this department the students are trained in examination, handling and presentation of dental evidences such as Human bite marks, cheiloscopy and Palatal rugoscopy.
Hematology: Students are trained with core skills in basic haematology Equipped with advanced centrifuge and bio-chem analyzers.
Immunohistochemistry: Various markers are being used in this powerful ancillary IHC studies for both diagnostic and research purposes.
- ELISA : Advanced antigen and antibody testing
Quality testing with high sensitivity and specificity.
