Excellence in Dentistry

Build a strong foundation in dental sciences through comprehensive academic learning, clinical exposure and hands-on patient care at LIDS.

1. Oral Pathology & Microbiology

Disease diagnosis. Histopathological learning. Research-focused training.

The MDS program in Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology at KLRS Lenora Institute of Dental Sciences focuses on understanding the causes, development and effects of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions. The specialty brings together basic sciences, pathology and clinical dentistry to help students understand how diseases are identified and diagnosed. Students gain exposure to clinical, radiographic, biochemical and histopathological investigations, along with areas such as hematology, cytology, microbiology, immunohistochemistry and forensic odontology. The department also supports research in areas including oral cancer and oral infections, helping students build strong diagnostic and research skills.

2. Program / Course Structure

A Structured Learning Journey in Oral Pathology

The MDS program combines theoretical knowledge, laboratory work and diagnostic training to help students understand the pathological basis of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial region. The academic areas include Applied Basic Sciences, Dental Anatomy and Dental Histology, and Oral Pathology.

Academic AreaAcademic FocusPractical & Diagnostic Exposure
Applied Basic SciencesUnderstanding the basic scientific principles related to oral diseasesLaboratory-based learning and diagnostic investigations
Dental Anatomy & HistologyUnderstanding the structure of teeth and oral tissuesTooth anatomy, tissue study and histological learning
Oral PathologyCauses, development and effects of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regionsClinical examination, histopathology, cytology, hematology and other diagnostic investigations

3. Clinical & Diagnostic Infrastructure

Understanding Disease Through Diagnosis

The department gives students exposure to the investigation and diagnosis of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions. Students learn how different diagnostic methods can be used to understand disease and support treatment planning.

The department also provides histopathological diagnosis of hard and soft tissue diseases of the oral cavity and conducts exfoliative cytology and FNAC when required.

Laboratory & Research Facilities

The department has a well-equipped histopathology laboratory with Penta-head, stereo and darkfield microscopes for studying and diagnosing head and neck pathologies. It also has facilities for hematology, microbial culture, immunohistochemistry and ELISA-based antigen and antibody testing.

Students also have access to a departmental museum with specimens and educational models, as well as a library containing more than 60 textbooks, atlases and national and international research journals.

4. Faculty & Mentorship

Building Diagnostic Skills Through Guided Learning

At the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology, we help students understand the pathological basis of diseases and develop the diagnostic skills needed to study complex oral and maxillofacial conditions. The department combines academic learning with laboratory-based training in histopathology, hematology, cytology and other diagnostic areas. Faculty members also encourage students to explore research and develop critical thinking, giving them a strong foundation for academic and professional growth.

Dr. Lakshmi Deepa V has received the Global Faculty Award in 2022 and Best Researcher Award in 2024.

7. Research & Future Development

Research That Supports Better Diagnosis

Research is an important part of the department's academic work. The department conducts research in oral cancer using advanced immunohistochemical methods and also explores the microbiological aspects of oral infections.

The department's future research plans include stem cell culture, cell-based therapy, drug discovery and development, cancer immunology and telepathology. These areas are aimed at expanding diagnostic capabilities and exploring new approaches in research and patient care.

The department also conducts OOO Meet discussions involving Oral Pathology, Oral Medicine & Radiology and Oral Surgery, where faculty members discuss diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of major diseases requiring extensive surgical management.
